WISCONSIN
IN THE
AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

Thursday May 21, 2009
at 6 p.m.
Meadowood Library

Orchard Ridge author/historian/grandpa John K. Driscoll will give
a presentation at the Meadowood Branch of the Madison Public Library
on May 21 at 6 p.m. about Wisconsin during the American Civil War.

John will present the condition of the new state
(only 13 years from territorial status when the war broke out)
and its people and how they saw the national situation at the time -- who
the Wisconsin volunteers were, where they came from, what they did for their livings,
what they ate, wore, and thought of the political situation then.

He’ll touch on Camp Randall and the three Wisconsin regiments in the famous
Iron Brigade of the Army of the Potomac, and look into why more than 90,000 Badgers marched off to fight in “somebody else’s war.”

Driscoll is working on his fourth book, the story of the Erie Railroad.
His previously published books are The Baraboo Guards,
Rogue: A Biography of Civil War General Justus McKinstry,
and The Civil War on Pensacola Bay.

We plan to deliver a full schedule of informational programming that provides our residents with a better understanding of the host of subjects that make our neighborhood a great place to live

Our primary goal as a committee is to produce six programs in 2009.

Our tasks right now:

* Recruit at least 6 members to be on the committee – at least 3 members of whom are active at any one time.

* Identify possible subjects, with all subjects for 2009 chosen by the end of June. (Examples: Wisconsin During the Civil War, Travel/Vacation Reports, Gardening Tips, Babysitting Training/Job Fair, Home Energy Efficiency, etc.)

* Identify several presenters for each subject

* Aim for programs that will be attended by at least 30 people

* Record presentations and make available as podcasts and/or streamed video on OrchardRidge.info Web site.

* Determine policies for time and place of various programs

* Choose first presentation, to be scheduled in June 2009

* Move forward on long-term plans for an Orchard Ridge History Project:
  1. Identify interviewers
  2. Identify interviewer instructors
  3. Identify photographers
  4. Involve neighborhood kids in tasks
  5. Discuss compilation, editing, publishing
